Natural gas production in the United States has skyrocketed over the past five years, making the carbon-light fossil fuel cheaper to access and plentiful for export, according to a new report by the Energy Information Administration. From the late 1970s to 1996, natural gas and crude oil reserves experienced a steady decline (Figure 1). In 1997, the downward trend for natural gas reversed because of innovations in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing techniques that successfully increased natural gas proved reserves and production from shale formations. Of that production, about 63% was oil, or approximately 1.7 million BPD, with 30% of it coming from the U.S., mainly from the Gulf of Mexico, California, and the Permian Basin. The U.S. Geological Survey assesses the amount of resources within oil and gas formations. These vast reserves stretch from the Northern Plains to the Gulf Coast to the Appalachian Mountains. Shale gas in the United States is rapidly increasing as an available source of natural gas. Led by new applications of hydraulic fracturing technology and horizontal drilling , development of new sources of shale gas has offset declines in production from conventional gas reservoirs, and has led to major increases in reserves of US natural gas.
