HOW MUCH OIL DO TANKERS CARRY? -- Tankers carry roughly two-thirds of oil trade, about 2.4 billion tons in 2005. The remainder travels mostly by pipelines, but also by trains and trucks. A fire aboard the oil tanker Castillo de Bellver in August 1983 was responsible for the tanker’s capsizing.
